Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are your dog training methods?
At Canine Compass Dog Training, we use force-free, science-backed, and positive reinforcement (R+) training methods. We are strictly against the use of aversive tools and methods like shock collars (e-collars), prong collars, choke chains, alpha rolls or leash corrections. Our philosophy focuses on rewarding "incompatible behaviors" to solve problem behaviors safely and effectively without causing long-term psychological stress or fear while facilitating long term success.
2. What are your certifications and qualifications?
Canine Compass Dog Training is led by a certified Family Dog Mediator (FDM), Fear-Free Certified Professional (FFCP) and Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) with over a decade of experience. We are proud members of The Pet Professional Guild (PPG) and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). Our unique expertise began in 2012, training exotic animals like elephants and rhinos, before transitioning to medical alert service dogs and family pets (including cats).
3. What makes Canine Compass Dog Training different from other Charlotte trainers?
Unlike "balanced" trainers who rely on physical corrections, we look at the "Whole Picture." Using the Family Dog Mediation framework, we analyze breed traits, environment, and history to solve behaviors at the source. Our background with 5-ton exotic animals taught us that physical force is never necessary to achieve reliable control and cooperation.
4. Do you work with dogs that have used e-collars or prong collars in the past?
Yes. We offer a judgment-free transition for owners in Charlotte who want to move away from aversive equipment. We specialize in educating owners on how to rebuild a relationship based on communication and trust rather than correction
5. Can you handle large, strong breeds (100+ lbs) or specific breeds?
Absolutely. We work with all breeds regardless of size or history. If we can train an elephant, we can train your dog! As Family Dog Mediators, we recognize that different breeds communicate differently; we decipher your dog’s unique genetic needs to achieve the most successful outcomes.
6. Can you help with leash pulling, barking, or other common behaviors?
Yes. We provide tailored behavior modification for a wide range of issues, including leash pulling, reactivity, excessive barking, jumping, separation anxiety, and resource guarding. We address the root cause of these behaviors to create long-term solutions without intimidation.
7. Do you work with aggressive dogs or dogs with a bite history?
Yes. We believe every dog deserves support. We work with aggressive and reactive dogs, including those with a bite history, using compassionate behavior modification that improves safety by addressing the underlying emotions driving the aggression.
8. How do you handle fearful or anxious dogs?
As Fear-Free minded professionals, we conduct a full behavioral evaluation for anxious dogs. We may collaborate with your veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist to discuss if supplements or medication are needed to lower your dog's stress threshold so that effective learning can take place.
9. Do you offer training for puppies?
Yes! We provide comprehensive puppy training in Charlotte, helping owners navigate potty training, crate training, nipping, and socialization. Our goal is to set your pup up for a lifetime of success using methods that build confidence from day one.
10. Can you train older dogs?
Yes! Dogs of any age can begin training. We have successfully worked with many senior dogs to address behavior issues or sharpen manners, ensuring they enjoy a peaceful and well-behaved "Golden Year" experience.
11. What kind of behaviors can you teach for Service Dogs?
We are one of the few trainers in North Carolina specializing in Owner-Trained Service Dogs. We teach tasks for POTS Alert (heart rate), Seizure and Diabetic Alert, and Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) tasks like anxiety interruption and Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT), alongside Public Access skills, as well as diabetic alert, seizure alert and allergen detection.
12. Do you offer group classes, agility, or therapy dog prep?
We specialize in private, in-home training, but we do offer specialized group sessions for Canine Good Citizen (CGC) prep and Therapy Dog training. While we don't offer agility, we highly recommend Zoom Room for fun agility lessons in the Charlotte area.
13. What is the structure of your private training sessions?
We offer 1-on-1 sessions that are each one hour long. Most programs consist of three solo sessions per week (where we work directly with your dog) followed by a "Guided Lesson" to coach the owner. This ensures the dog learns the skill first, making the hand-off to you seamless.
14. What should I expect during an in-home session?
We can work with your dog whether you are present or not. Many owners provide a key or code so we can let ourselves in, give the dog a potty break, and begin training. As they progress, we may take "field trips" to dog-friendly Charlotte pet stores to practice with real-world distractions.
15. What equipment do I need, and is it okay if I have cameras?
You will need high-value treats, a flat collar, a 6ft non-retractable leash, and a well-fitted harness. We never use shock or prong collars. We are also 100% comfortable working in homes with security cameras and welcome the transparency.
16. How should I prepare my dog for training?
Have your supplies ready and, if your dog is reactive, try to limit their exposure to triggers before we begin to prevent the behavior from being reinforced. Beyond that, there is no pressure to practice anything beforehand—we handle the heavy lifting!
17. What is your service area and cancellation policy?
We provide in-home training in Charlotte, NC, and surrounding areas (as north as Huntersville, as east as Mint Hill, as South as Weddington and as west as Mt Holly). Deposits are non-refundable, but start dates can be pushed back. We require 12 hours' notice to move a session; sessions canceled with less than 12 hours' notice will not be rescheduled except in emergencies.
18. What rescue organizations have you worked with?
Right now we are partnered with Lucky Labs Rescue, offering discounted training sessions to their foster dogs. They are a fantastic non-profit rescue for beautiful Labrador Retrievers. Find more information on their website.
19. How do I schedule a training session?
Reach out via our website contact form and tell us about your dog. We typically respond within 1–2 business days via your preferred contact method to schedule your initial evaluation.
